Release Blast: Kiss Me That Way by Laura Trentham (+ Review)

Happy release day to Kiss Me That Way by Laura Trentham!!

Synopsis:

A river divides Cottonbloom in two: the upscale enclave on the Mississippi side and the rundown, rough and tumble side in Louisiana. They’re worlds apart—but nothing can build a bridge like love…

Cade Fournette never had it easy Cottonbloom. He stuck around long enough to raise his orphaned siblings and then hightailed it out West—and never looked back. Even though he’s made a success of himself in Seattle, Cade never lost the toughness and the angry edge that helped him survive down South. His only weak spot: the girl he left behind…

Monroe Kirby came from the wealthy side of town, but that didn’t protect her from her mother’s drinking—or her mother’s boyfriend. It was Cade who did that, on a long-ago hot September night, before he disappeared…along with a piece of her heart. Now Monroe is a physical therapist who can fight for herself, and it’s Cade who could use some conditioning when he makes an unexpected return back home. Will he and Monroe pick up where they left off and finally explore their mutual passion—or will the scars and secrets of the past divide them once more?

Excerpt:

“You left Cottonbloom without telling me. Without saying good-bye. I want to know why.” Monroe hadn’t meant for the words to come out at all, much less with such vehemence.

“It was complicated.” Cade broke eye contact. “You were a good kid in a bad situation.”

“Weren’t you a good kid in a bad situation?”

He shifted toward her, bracing a hand on the dash and laying his other arm over the back of her seat, invading her space. She didn’t retreat. His intensity spurred her heart rate into an erratic gallop, yet she wasn’t intimidated. Perhaps it was only echoes of the past, but he made her feel safe, even when he was the one she should be scared of.

“I grew up fast and tough.” His voice contained more than a hint of warning.

“You were nice to me,” she said softly.

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking I’m nice. I wasn’t then, and I’m sure as hell not now.”

He ran a callused finger down her cheek, the rasp igniting her nerve endings like a flint. His hand continued south and wrapped itself in her braid, the slight tug on her scalp sending shivers through her body in spite of the sun bearing down on the truck. Her nipples felt tight, and she hoped her tight sports tank masked her sudden, inexplicable arousal.

He pulled her braid, forcing her toward him. She didn’t fight him. He dropped his face next to hers, his coarse beard hair caressing her cheek, his mouth close to her ear. “If I see something I want, I go after it and get it by any means necessary.”

“How very Machiavellian.” She tried a laugh, but it came out more like a stuttering sigh. His scent hooked her even closer, and her lips grazed the outer rim of his ear.

He pulled back, his green-eyed gaze roving her face. She returned the favor, noting the faint brackets around his mouth, the crinkles at his eyes, the thick beard. A full-grown man. Yet was he so different from the boy she remembered?

“Ovid.” The movement of his lips jammed the cogs of her brain. The word made no sense. Her confusion must have been obvious, because the mouth she stared at tipped up in the corners, deepening the grooves. “The Greek philosopher Ovid, not Machiavelli, actually wrote: The end justifies the means.”

“Ovid. Of course.” Apparently, Monroe had slept through that philosophy class at Ole Miss. The fact that high-school dropout Cade Fournette was quoting Ovid made her wonder what other mysteries she might uncover if she went digging.

Just when she was ready to grab a shovel, he released her braid and slipped away. His limp was less pronounced as he took the stairs holding the cane parallel to the ground. Although he’d physically released her, she felt bound to him in some other fundamental way, incapable of tearing her eyes off him until he disappeared behind Sawyer’s front door. Even then, she sat, unable to drive away for a long minute.

How could the simple brush of Cade’s finger ignite a fire when other men left her cold? As her arousal ebbed, she realized something else. She’d just been manipulated by a master. He hadn’t explained why he left.

She spent the evening going through the motions of her life, eating when her stomach growled and heading to bed when her eyes felt heavy. A few short hours ago, her life had been tidy and predictable and boring. Cade Fournette’s return had spun her into chaos.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5 out of 5 stars

There is not a strong enough word in the English vocabulary to adequately describe just how much I loved Kiss Me That Way, the first book in Laura Trentham's new Cottonbloom series! Seriously this book was absolutely flawless! It perfectly straddled the line between intense, emotional read and feel-good romance with wonderfully memorable characters that left a lasting impression on me.

Seriously, Cade and Monroe and crew were absolutely amazing. They were those types of characters who are so perfectly imperfect that you can't help but love them. The made me laugh and cry and feel all types of other emotions and I loved every single second of it. And the romance depicted between Cade and Monroe was one that left me in awe of how well they fit together. Romances like this are why romance will forever be my genre of choice.

While I loved pretty much everything about this book, there were two particular things that I loved most of all. First, I loved how the relationship between Cade and Monroe was a long time coming going back to the moment that Cade helped Monroe out that one night when she was 13 and he 18. It gave their romance that epic feeling that I had really been craving. And secondly, I loved how while this book is technically a romance that can standalone that it still beautifully set up the next two books and really built up the excitement for those two couples.

Overall, this is book was a really exceptional contemporary romance! I can totally see myself rereading it again and again and recommending the hell of it because it was just so good and I'm never going to get enough of these characters and Cottonbloom.

ARC Review: Stormswept by Deborah Martin

Title: Stormswept

Author: Sabrina Jeffries writing as Deborah Martin

Synopsis:

New York Times bestseller Sabrina Jeffries reignites a daring love affair in this intriguing tale of desire and deception—originally written as Deborah Martin and newly revised for today’s audience.

The first wedding night that Lady Juliana St. Albans spent with the dark and daring Rhys Vaughan was intoxicating, the heady culmination of her new husband’s driving hunger and her own awakened sensuality. When he mysteriously disappeared the next morning, she waited for him in hope and desperation. And when he was finally proclaimed dead in a shipwreck, she bitterly mourned the loss of her love.

The second wedding night that Juliana spent with Rhys Vaughan was six years later, after he returned to claim her just as she was about to wed another. This Rhys was different—bolder, harder, and convinced that she’d betrayed him. Only their blazing passion remains from their years apart. But is it enough to light their way through the maze of mystery, menace, and mistrust—to the love they once shared and would have to find again?

5 out of 5 stars

I am so happy that this author's publisher decided to rerelease this book because I absolutely loved it and makes me sad to think about the fact that I probably would have never discovered it otherwise. This book got to me in the best way possible. Rhys and Juliana's love story was the perfect example as to why I can never get enough of historical romance.

First things first, I really loved the way that the story was told. The way it starts off during Juliana's engagement party to another man with Rhys unexpectedly crashing the party, then goes back to six years before and shows you how Rhys and Juliana's fell in love, and then returns again to the current timeline to see how their reunion is going to play out was absolutely wonderful. It was the best way to tell the story because it builds up the anticipation and doesn't leave out any details when it comes to how their relationship progressed.

Everything in the 6 years before period was sweet and passionate and makes the reader become fully invested in these characters, so that when you get to that moment when they are torn apart you are left truly outraged. And then the 6 years later part is filled with so much angst, but is still just as passionate as the six years before portion as these characters learn the true details about what caused their separation and figure out how to get passed it and trust each other again. All together it was all so epic and I just loved it so much!

Overall, this book was perfect!!! It was such a grade A historical romance and has convinced that I really need to stock up on other books from this author's extensive backlist!

ARC Review: The Beast of Clan Kincaid by Lily Blackwood

Title: The Beast of Clan Kincaid

Author: Lily Blackwood

Synopsis:

A Highland warrior battles to reclaim his birthright in the first of a new series filled with seduction, revenge, and soul-stirring passion…

They call him the Beast—a hardened mercenary whose heart seems as cold as his icy blue gaze. They do not know his true name: Niall Braewick, son of the Laird of Kincaid. It has been years since he escaped into the forest the night his father was murdered. Now he has returned, ablaze with a vengeful hunger. He will gain the MacClaren chief’s trust, gather his clan, and take back his lands. And take the MacClaren’s daughter as well…

Though he pulled her from the river, saving her life, Elspeth has been warned to keep her distance from her father’s hired warrior. He is a barbarian—a shame, as he is far more compelling than the lechers and fools competing for her dowry. Little does she know that, like the castle itself, she is a prize Niall intends to claim…but will he extract blood for blood and possess what is his, or will his enemy’s beautiful, innocent daughter tempt him to forsake his dream of conquest?

5 out of 5 stars

The Beast of Clan Kincaid was one of my most highly anticipated historical romance novels of 2016 and it so did not disappoint. Everything about this book was absolutely amazing in my opinion. Niall was the brooding, mysterious historical romance hero that I can never seem to get enough of. And Elspeth, despite the fact that I can never pronounce her name right, was a wonderfully headstrong and independent heroine that I could really get behind. I loved the romance that progressed between the two of them. It was one that really got my heart racing and made it almost impossible for me to put down this book.

Aside from the romance, I also really just loved everything that was going on with Niall returning to get his revenge and take back the land that was stolen from him. I really loved how the author dealt with the situation because it was all very exciting, but not too over the top. I thought when I started the book that I would be rolling my eyes at the fact that no one recognized Niall from when he was younger, but throughout the story it never felt unrealistic. Going on the thing that I loved the most about this story was how the author revealed what had happened to Niall's brothers. I won't go into it for spoiler reasons, but I was really shocked by the reveal and it's one of the main reasons I'm so excited for the next book in the series because I need to know more!

Overall, The Beast of Clan Kincaid was a superb historical romance novel and I was so right to be excited for this book. Seriously, this is a must-read for historical romance fans especially if you're like me and are dying for more historicals set in time periods other than the Regency period because I almost forgot to mention this book was set in the 1300s and it was amazing!

I NEEDED A CHANGE!!!

So lately I have been in a weird blogging funk and while I would like to blame it on the fact that I started a new job at the end of April, it has become clear to me in recent days that it is more than that. So I thought about it and I have come to the conclusion that the way to get out of this horrible funk is to make some much needed changes.

The first and most important change being that I'm changing the name of this blog and reinventing myself a little bit. This blog will now be known as Sammi's Bookish Reality. As much as I loved being The Rambling Book Junkie, there was just too many other bloggers with similar names and I was confused for one of them one too many times, so the name change was much needed. And I've got to say I'm loving my new blog name 100 times more than the original one.

The second change is that this blog will for now on only be dedicated to romance novels. This is not as big a change as the name change since I already blog about romance novels the most, but now I'm making it official. I will still read books in other genres and I will continue to talk about them on Twitter and stuff, I just won't be dedicating blog time to them in the future.

I will also be making some more minor changes to how and when I post, but for the most part the two above mentioned changes are the more significant changes.

Anywho, I hope that you all will continue to support me as I begin this new phase in my blogging career and are looking forward to what I have in store for this blog going forward.

***MY REVIEW***

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5 out of 5 stars

Not only was From Friend to Fake Fiance one of my all-time favorite friend to lovers and fake relationship romances, it was just an all around great contemporary romance read. Jenna and Mac's love story was an all around win for me and honestly there was nothing I dislike about this book by Jules Bennett. But as much as I loved everything about this book, what I loved the most about the story were the characters. Jenna was one of those characters that you can really rally behind and root for. Then we have Mac, who I wasn't sure I was going to like at first. but he totally won me over in the end. I just wish he would have gotten on the relationship train a lot faster. Regardless, I loved the way their relationship progressed. I just loved the way that these two were together even with their many problems thanks to Mac's initial fear to truly commit. Overall, I really loved this book. It was a great contemporary romance and is why that even though this is only the second book by this author I have read that I count her as one of my favorites.

***MY REVIEW***

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4 out of 5 stars

Outlaw Cowboy, the second book in Nicole Helm's Big Sky Cowboy series, was another really enjoyable contemporary romance by this author. I really have a thing for bad boy characters trying to do the right thing, so it is no surprise that I really loved Caleb's character. Delia was also a really awesome character, although there were times when I wanted to shake some sense into her because some of her reasoning for doing things were kind of ridiculous in my opinion. But despite some of my frustrations with her character I still really liked her and she was the perfect girl for Caleb. Their romance was one of those that completely had my attention from the very beginning and I was fully invested in seeing how everything was going to play out between them. And how everything plays out between these two at the end so did not disappoint. I especially loved what Caleb did in order to help resolve Delia's legal problems. It was so Caleb and inside my head I was so applauding him for what he did. Overall, Outlaw Cowboy was a fun, sexy contemporary romance. While I still kind of like Rebel Cowboy a little bit more, Outlaw Cowboy was definitely a very, very close second.

Except the man desperate to make things right with his newfound son is nothing like the rock god she's guarded her heart against for years. And it isn't long before she starts to wonder if life with this bad boy might be the best thing that's ever happened to her.

***MY REVIEW***

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4 out of 5 stars

While Return of the Bad Boy is the second book by this author that I have read, it is only the first book I've read in the series which was kind of mistake on my part. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book a lot, which is why I gave it four stars, but since I hadn't read the previous three book in this series I found it particularly hard to keep all of the characters straight and how they were connected to each other. Aside from that little bit of confusion for me, I really did like the love story in this book. Gloria and Asher where two very interesting and very memorable characters. Jessica totally managed to get me 100% invested in Asher and Gloria's second chance romance and made me need their HEA, which she delivered satisfyingly. Overall, I really liked this book and I'm looking forward to rereading it hopefully in the near future once I've had a chance to read the first three, so that I can appreciate this book even more.

ARC Review: Never Let You Go by Monica Murphy

Despite my love for Ethan, the doubts creep in, clouding my mind. Is he worth the pain? Will our love survive, or will we have no choice but to end it—end us—once and for all?

***MY REVIEW***

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5 out of 5 stars

So this review is going to be very short and sweet since I'm pretty much incapable of talking about this book without wanting to spoil everything, so I'm just going to say this, Never Let You Go was the perfect sequel to Never Tear Us Apart. While I'm a longtime fan of Monica Murphy and she has never let me down, I got to say that deep down inside I was kind of worried that given the premise of the duology that I wasn't going to be completely satisfied with the ending, but I was worried for nothing because this book was the ending that Katie and Will deserved and so much more. Like with the first book, Never Let You Go made me feel a rollercoaster of emotions and the author even managed to shock me even more this time around with some of the crazy stuff that happened. But back to Katie and Will, if you weren't completely convinced that these two were meant to be in the first book, I can promise you that this book will. These two were just so right together and getting to see them fight for their relationship despite public opinion was the best.

Overall, Never Let You Go was an excellent read. It is definitely one of top five favorite romances ever and if you haven't read it or Never Tear Us Apart yet, what are you waiting for? Seriously, these books are amazing and you won't be disappointed!

2 out of 5 stars

Welcome Home, Cowboy isn't a horrible book and I can see other people really loving it, but this story just wasn't for me. While I really liked the premise of this story and the author's writing style I just didn't connect with either of the two main characters and as a result I just wasn't able to really get into their love story. Also, I felt like the author should have gone more in depth when it came to the incident that caused Lawson to suffer from PTSD, as well as what happened in Julie's past relationship. Both things are important to the storyline, but I felt like they were kind of glossed over and not sufficiently fleshed out. But as I stated at the beginning of the review, I have to admit while this story just didn't work for me personally, based on the things I did like I can totally see other readers really loving this romance, so don't let my dislike of this book scare you away. Lol.

ARC Review: After We Fall by Marquita Valentine

Title: After We Fall

Author: Marquita Valentine

Synopsis:

After winning raves for Take the Fall (“crackling with tension, intrigue, and romance”—Katy Evans) and When We Fall (“sexy, emotional, heartfelt”—Monica Murphy), Marquita Valentine ratchets up the tension as new beginnings lead to undeniable passion.

A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

5 out of 5 stars

After We Fall, was a great, emotional contemporary romance novel. The book which follows cop Hunter Sloan as he falls in love with Evangeline, a woman who had recently escaped an abusive relationship really tugged at my heartstrings and made me feel all the things.

I haven't read many books with characters who have suffered really traumatic experiences in recent months, preferring to read more light-hearted, feel-good romances instead, but I got to say After We Fall was a good break from my recent norm because sometimes you just need a well-written emotional read and After We Fall fit the bill perfectly.

The romance that sparked between Hunter and Evangeline was so good. The way that Hunter was with Evangeline was just so perfect and left my heart racing. But as much as I loved the romance in this book, what I loved the most was getting to see Evangeline move on and start living again after everything that she endured at the hands of her ex-husband and the ways in which Hunter helped while still respecting her boundaries and not trying to completely take over her life.

Overall, I really loved this book. It was a great, emotionally charged romance and I can't wait to read more by this author in the near future.

Blog Tour: The Seduction of Kinley Foster by Lisa Wells (Review + Excerpt)

Synopsis:

Librarian Kinley Foster wants to write erotic romance—the steamy, sexy, curl-your-toes kind of stuff. The problem? She desperately needs a little erotic inspiration. And at a romance convention in Vegas, she finds it...or rather him. The sizzlingly sexy guy who refused Kinley—and her virginity—when she was sixteen.

Now it's time for a little payback.

Literary agent Ian Thompson is a professional. Mentoring an aspiring author is one thing. Giving her a thorough and thoroughly satisfying sexy education is quite another. Especially when she's as stunning and deliciously curvaceous as Kinley. Yet Ian can't help himself when Kinley makes him a wager he can't resist. A wager that will tempt Ian to cross every professional—and every sensual—boundary in the book...

Excerpt:

Ian opened the door to his suit around seven p.m. and found Kinley, the woman who sarcastically be she could handle him mentoring her on sex way better than he could handle teaching her about sex—yes, that’s right, she’d bet about them and sex—dozing on the couch in a pair of flannel pajamas featuring pink elephants in tutus.

He could talk her through the intricacies of passion, give her an understanding of what real chemistry was. This bet was in the bag.

His scrutiny lingered on the sight of her hair splayed across the pillow. One she must have snatched from the suite’s king-sized bed. She had one arm thrown across her face as if to shield her eyes from the light of the lamp she hadn’t turned off.
A glass of red wine sat on the table beside her with an empty wine bottle next to it. Her laptop stood open on the coffee table. He liked her hair down. All crazy curls and volume. She shifted, and he caught sight of an expanse of bare skin between her the gap of her bottoms and her top. His breath hitched.

Damn it. He was going to lose the bet.

***MY REVIEW***

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4 out of 5 stars

Whenever I pick up a What Happens in Vegas book from Entangled's Lovestruck line I'm expecting a fun, sweet, and flirty contemporary romance and that is exactly what Lisa Wells delivered with her contribution, The Seduction of Kinley Foster. This book was just an all around fun, feel-good read and I enjoyed reading about Kinley and Ian and the stuff they got into as they attended the romance convention in Vegas. It was all really entertaining and I enjoyed this book immensely. Although, while I really liked this book there were a few more things in this book that threw me off such as why Kinley would let her brother read her erotic novel and also more importantly why Kinley would think it was a good idea to offer her virginity to Ian when she was sixteen. We never get into too much depth about what was really going through her head at the time, which I would have like to see since that initial rejection is a key factor in the way things progress between the two character in the present. Aside from that I had no actual complaints about this book and overall I really loved it. It was a hilarious, lighthearted contemporary romance with a good dose of steamy fun and I highly recommend it.

Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson’s worlds have no reason to collide. Ever. Quaid is a high powered criminal attorney as slick as he is handsome. Avett is a pink-haired troublemaker with a bad attitude and a history of picking the wrong men.

When Avett lands in a sea of hot water because of one terrible mistake, the only person who can get her out of it is the insanely sexy lawyer. The last thing on earth she wants to do is rely on the no-nonsense attorney who thinks of her as nothing more than a nuisance. He literally has her fate in his hands. Yet there is something about him that makes her want to convince him to loosen his tie and have a little fun…with her.

Quaid never takes on clients like the impulsive young woman with a Technicolor dye job. She could stand to learn a hard lesson or two, but something about her guileless hazel eyes intrigues him. Still, he’s determined to keep their relationship strictly business. But doing so is becoming more impossible with each day he spends with her.

As they work side-by-side, they’ll have to figure out a way to get along and keep their hands off each other—because the chemistry between them is beyond charged.

Excerpt:

I tapped the edge of my thumb on the black-and-white mug shot photo and couldn’t stop the grin from tugging at my mouth.

She tried to fire me.

She was five-foot-nothing, a lifetime younger than me, had multicolored hair that had seen better days, wild eyes that couldn’t decide if they wanted to be green, gold, or brown, while dressed in convict orange and obviously scared out of her ever loving mind, yet she still tried to fire me. If it had been any of my other clients—the cop accused of sexual battery, the frat boy accused of manslaughter over a bet on a football game gone wrong, the middle school teacher accused of pedophilia and having an inappropriate relationship with several of her students, or the pro football player accused of domestic abuse—I would have tipped my proverbial hat, wished them luck while I cut my losses, and walked away without a backward glance. People always committed crimes. People always needed a good defense, so it wasn’t like I was hurting for clients, but there was something about the girl. Something about the defiant tilt of her chin and the raw desperation in her tone when she begged me not to call her father.

“I don’t want your help. I don’t want anything from you.” She sounded like she meant it when she said it, but I figured she was too young and too scared to know exactly what she wanted or needed. Regardless, it was still refreshing to hear.

Everyone always wanted something from me and my help was usually the least of it.

I tapped the picture again, wondering why I found it so easy to believe that she really hadn’t been a part of the boyfriend’s plan to rob the bar. She wasn’t anyone’s idea of a model citizen and she had the shady track record to prove it. She was too young, and frankly too adorable, to have a file this thick. From what I could see, she had a set of parents always willing to ride to the rescue when she got herself into trouble. She looked like some kind of colorful woodland fairy from a Disney movie with her odd hair and delicate features. None of it added up, but the sincerity in her tone when she said she would never have gone with the boyfriend if she knew his intent and the fear in her eyes when I mentioned her father seemed genuine.

I learned long ago to treat everyone like they were guilty of whatever it was I was paid to defend them against. I didn’t want to know the truth. I didn’t want to know the circumstances. I wanted my clients to listen to me and let me do my job as I tried to convince the rest of the world they were innocent, regardless if they were or not. But this girl with her faded, rose colored hair and turbulent eyes oozed innocence through the cracks of a very guilty façade.

Because I was intrigued and actually believed the girl might be innocent, I wasn’t going to let her fire me. I was going to call her father and hope that he would help me keep her out of the slammer while I figured out how to plea bargain her charges down or get them dismissed altogether. Again, because a cop was involved in the robbery and because the boyfriend, junkie or not, was offering up a pretty plausible explanation for Avett’s involvement in the crime, nothing was a slam dunk, yet. I was going to help her whether she wanted me to or not.

***MY REVIEW***

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5 out of 5 stars

I have read almost every book by this author to date and I got to say that Charged, the second full-length novel in her Saints of Denver series is by far my all-time favorite. This is really saying something because I didn't really think I would like Quaid and Avett, let alone end loving them as much as I did. When we had met Quaid previously he just didn't grab my attention as much as Jay's other men did and I actually really hated Avett, but that didn't stop me from still being excited about this book because Jay has never let me down and she definitely didn't let me down with this book! I loved this book to pieces. Everything about this book was perfect from the characters to the plot to how the relationship flowed.

Avett was a mess, but she was really real to me and I loved her so much because as fucked up as her life was she was trying. And I loved that Quaid wasn't as put together as he originally came across to me when we met him previously. I especially loved his backstory of how he grew up because it gave his character some more depth. Their love story was such an awesome roller coaster ride and I enjoyed every second of it and as much as I loved their HEA I was kind of sad to see their story come to an end.

Aside from the main characters and the amazing romance in this book, I loved how previous characters were featured in this book. Even if it was just something as tiny as Avett or Quaid mentioning their names it made me all giddy to see and hear about what they were up to. I also really loved the seeds that Jay planted for the following books in this series. I'm even more excited for what's to come now!

Overall, this books was amazing! Whether you are a long-time fan of Jay Crownover or new to her writing, this book is a must-read romance in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars

How I Married a Marquess, the conclusion to Anna Harrington's The Secret Life of Scoundrels series, was by far the best of the trilogy. Josephine and Thomas's story was absolutely EVERYTHING, which is really saying something because Thomas was actually my least favorite of the three leading men in this series when he was first introduced, but he completely stole my heart in this book. But as much as I loved him the true star of this book was the heroine, Josephine. I have a legit girl crush on Josephine's character. She was the BEST and didn't sit back and take anyone's crap. She went out and got things done in order to do what she believed was right and help out the children at the orphanage. I loved her character too much and out of all the historical romances I've read she is definitely one of my top five favorite heroines. On top of the two amazing leading characters, I also really loved the secondary characters especially Josephine's brothers. They didn't show too much, but they made a lasting impression and I am really happy that this author's next series is about them. Anywho, back to this book, the romance in this book was by far my favorite. Out of the three couples in this book, Josephine and Thomas where the ones who I felt were the most on equal footing attitude wise and that made their romance explosively good. As well as the love story, I also really loved the plot surrounding the robberies and Josephine's part in them. It was all so much fun to read about and the resolution to everything at the end was hilarious. And talking about the end, the epilogue of this book was amazing and left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside because it made me so happy.

Overall, this book was so great and it was the perfect ending to such a spectacular historical romance series. I highly recommend it as well as the first two books in this series!

4 out of 5 stars

Along Came a Rogue, the second book in Anna Harrington's The Secret Life of Scoundrels series was a very fun sequel. Nathaniel and Emily's love story was absolutely wonderful and I loved how different it was from a lot of the other historical romance I read because of the situation that Emily was in. I won't go into it because of spoilers, but I found it very unique and I really loved how the author dealt with that particular plot point. Anywho, special circumstances aside, my favorite part of this book was the really sweet romance between Nathaniel and Emily. I read a lot of romances in which the heroine falls in love with their brothers's best friends in both the historical and contemporary romance sub-genres and the one featured in this book was a particularly good one. The only issue I had with this book was that there were aspects of the plot that I felt like could have been fleshed out a little bit more since I felt like the resolution to all of Emily's problems at the end of the book was a bit abrupt. Other than that this book was fantastic and it was a another great installment to this wonderful series by one of my new favorite historical romance authors.

ARC Review: Dukes are Forever by Anna Harrington

Title: Dukes are Forever

Author: Anna Harrington

Synopsis:

5 out of 5 stars

Dukes are Forever, the first book in Anna Harrington's The Secret Life of Scoundrels series, was a spectacular debut and everything that I love about historical romance! Everything about this book was a win for me. Kate was a phenomenal heroine and Edward was a brooding, swoon-worthy hero that I just couldn't get enough of. The premise of the book was just wonderful. The whole deal with Edward wanting to absolutely ruin Kate's father in order to get revenge for what the despicable man did to his brother and sister-in-law had my attention from the very beginning. It was the perfect way for Edward and Kate to meet and added the perfect amount of drama to their relationship. And talking about their relationship, I really loved the way everything played out in this book between them. It wasn't a fast moving romance, but it also wasn't slow. Instead everything happened in a way that allowed me as a reader to really savor their love story and it was oh so satisfying from beginning to end.

Overall, this book was a marvelous debut. Books like this is why I'm craving more and more historical romance novels as time passes and I honestly can't recommend it enough.

Virtual Tour: One Night With the CEO by Mia Sosa (Review + Excerpt + Giveaway)

Synopsis:

After some disappointing dates, Karen Ramirez has concluded that great sex is for other people. Especially since medical school won’t leave her much time for romance anyway. Then she runs into tall, dark, charming, and ridiculously wealthy Mark Lansing—and quickly reconsiders celibacy. Adding to temptation? Mark will be the best man at her sister’s wedding and the nuptial destination is sultry Puerto Rico. Now this trip might just be sensory overload—or the perfect chance for Karen to find the groove she’s never had.

For CEO Mark Lansing, his perfect match would be smart, sweet, and funny, with long legs and silky hair the color of dark chocolate. In short, someone a lot like Karen. But Mark’s looking to settle down, while a relationship is the last thing on Karen’s mind. So Mark proposes a plan: he and Karen will use their weekend in paradise to sizzling advantage—before downshifting to friendship. The only problem? Karen is all Mark can think of when he gets home. Now his most challenging negotiation will be for the one thing money can’t buy...

Excerpt:

Well, that had escalated quickly.

Mark’s mouth captured hers. She tasted salt and a hint of sweetness on his lips, a heady combination that made her moan in appreciation. She arched into him, wanting—no, needing— to feel his body against hers. He responded by snaking his hand under her hair and caressing her neck. Seconds later, he wrapped his other hand around her middle and stroked her back. Mark’s kiss promised a full-body experience, and she shivered in response to all the points of contact. Finally, he drew back, gulping in air. Oh, right. She needed to breathe. Funny how easily he made her forget a minor inconvenience like breathing.

She pressed her face against his chest and held on to the lapels of his suit jacket as she took in air. “What’s happening?”

He brushed his fingers against her hair. “I’m sorry for acting like an ass.”

She looked up at him then. “That’s your version of an apology?”

He stepped back and ran a hand through his hair. “No, that’s my version of being selfish. What I should have done was apologize for being a jerk to you. You didn’t deserve it.”

She nodded. “You’ll get no argument from me there.”

He stepped toward her and reached for her hands. “I wanted to kiss you, but I didn’t think it would be a smart move, so I took my frustration out on you.”

“And the kiss?”

He dropped her hands and shoved his own in his pockets. “The kiss is harder to explain.”

“Um, unless I’m missing something, the phenomenon is called attraction. Your pheromones and my pheromones are sending chemo-signals to each other. Totally normal.”

He gave her his trademark half smile. “Totally not a good idea, either.”

She didn’t disagree with him. Doing anything with Mark didn’t figure in her plans, no matter how much he’d nearly owned her with a single kiss. “Again, you’ll get no argument from me. Still, that kiss was pretty freaking hot.”

Mark closed his eyes and raised his head to the night sky. “Stop doing that. I’m relying on you to be the voice of reason in this situation.”

Ha. That was cute. But she’d oblige him anyway, because she needed to put the kiss in its proper place: a momentary lapse in judgment not to be repeated. If she didn’t, he’d consume her thoughts, and she couldn’t afford the distraction. “Mark, look around. We’re in Puerto Rico. You look hot. I look hot. It’s hot, period. And we’re standing in front of a garden. You hear that?”

“What?”

“The coquis.”

“What’s a coqui?”

She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Only one of the most important cultural symbols of Puerto Rico.” When he stared at her blankly, she continued. “The tiny frogs, Mark. You must have seen them everywhere at the airport. T-shirts, mugs, hats, you name it. Listen.”

They faced each other in silence. “That’s their mating call,” she told him. “They’re practically begging us to lock lips. You can’t be faulted for wanting to kiss me under these circumstances.”

He bridged the distance between them. “What if I told you I’ve wanted to kiss you every single second I’ve been in your presence? Can you explain that?”

She gulped. “Well, that’s a little harder to explain.”

He pressed his hand against the back of her neck and pulled her flush against him. “And I’ve never wanted to stop at kissing. I want us to do more than that. A lot more.”

***MY REVIEW**

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5 out of 5 stars

So this review is going to be short and sweet because I don't have much to say about One Night with the CEO other than that it was absolutely flawless in my opinion. This book which follows medical student Karen Ramirez and CEO Mark Lansing as they fall in love after being thrown together at her sister and his best friend's destination wedding in Puerto Rico worked for me on so many levels. Mark was a swoon-worthy hero and Karen was an amazing Latina and their romance was so hot and adorable all at the same time. But while I found these two perfect together, there was still a good bit of drama throughout the book and instead of feeling forced it was very believable in regards to these characters, so I have nothing to rant about when it comes to Karen and Mark's decisions throughout the book. Lol. Anywho, I loved this book to pieces. It really was perfect and is proof as to why Mia Sosa is auto-buy author for me even though she is still a relatively new author.
