Blog Tour: In Search of Scandal by Susanne Lord (Top 10 List + Giveaway + Review)

Today's the day! In Search of Scandal, my top favorite historical romance of the year has been released! And, seriously, y'all are really not going to want to miss this one! It was amazing!

All of London is abuzz with the tale of Will Repton. The lone survivor of a massacre in Tibet has returned to England a hero, but the traumatized explorer has no time for glory. Another dangerous expedition awaits. Nothing will deter him from his quest, and no one will unearth his secret—until Will meets Charlotte Baker.

Vivacious Charlotte Baker also has a mission—to find a man whose bold spirit matches her own. When she meets Will Repton, she immediately recognizes him as her soul mate, and she’s naively willing to turn her back on the rules of propriety to ensnare him. Will is torn between his fascination with Charlotte and his vow to finish his quest. He knows what it is to risk life and limb—but what if his most perilous adventure doesn’t lie across an ocean, but within his own lost heart?

Susanne Lord's Top 10 Favorite Things About Victorian Romance:
  1. I love that there were no phones or internet, and that letters took days to travel in-country.  The patience and value the Victorians were forced to put into their communications is so different from the constant deluge of information we face every day.
  2. The fashion!  Mother of pearl buttons, embroidered fabric, hand-stitched clothing.  What’s not to love?
  3. The Victorian age in England was a truly remarkable era, full of incredible advances in the sciences and social reform, and many authors, like Courtney Milan, incorporate much of that history into their stories.
  4. The focus on personal dignity.  My heroes and heroines would disdain tweeting their every thought, and would be mortified by negative social media.
  5. The ceremony of taking tea with your friends.  I love the biscuits, cakes and little sandwiches!
  6. The English countryside.  Those landscapes just speak to my soul.  I wonder if I was a sheep in a former life…?
  7. The heroes don’t wear skinny jeans, have their nose buried in a smart phone, and wear their hair in topknots that ruin their looks.  (Can you tell I’m old and I work with Millennials?)
  8. Just outside the aristocratic parlors, Victorian London had a truly grisly side.  My other genre-love is horror, and there was so much poverty in London, that Victorians committed some truly depraved acts in their struggle to survive.
  9. So many Victorian-era buildings survive in England, that I feel a little like a time-traveller when I am fortunate enough to travel there and find streets and places that I’ve read of in my favorite author’s books.
  10. I love all the crazy, social rules.  With each historical romance I read, I learn and recognize more of them, and that knowledge heightens my enjoyment of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars

Susanne Lord's debut historical romance, In Search of Scandal, was such an amazing read! This book was everything that I love about historical romance and so much more. EVERYTHING.

First off, the principal characters were amazing. Charlotte was a strong and independent woman who loved her family and was willing to do anything to restore their slightly tarnished reputation. And Will even with his limp and initial bad attitude in the beginning chapters, ended up becoming such a swoon-worthy historical romance hero. I loved him so much especially after we learn everything that happened while he was away on his last expedition and why he was so determined to go back.

Secondly, I adored these two as a couple. The way everything progressed between Charlotte and Will was perfect. I loved how sure Charlotte was that Will was the one she needed to marry and how determined she was to convince him. And when he finally realized that he really did love Charlotte it was the most perfect "hallelujah" moment. I swear I heard angels sing.

And thirdly, the overall plot of the book was just really good. It had just the right amount of scandal to keep me turning the pages with both of Charlotte and Will's pasts and how it was affecting them and influenced the decisions they made. And I especially loved that the author tied up the plot of this book with what is now my favorite historical romance HEA ever while still leaving the door open for more in this series.

Overall, this book was hands down my favorite historical romance read of 2015 and for the foreseeable future whenever someone asks me for a historical romance recommendation this is what I will be suggesting. Seriously, this book was that good!
